Germany believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not stop at Ukraine. He could also attack the Baltic states, Moldova and Georgia, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said, according to ZDFheute.

Putin has broader goals

The minister believes Russia has further plans beyond its war against Ukraine.

Wadephul warns that Russia could also lay claim to former Soviet countries like Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. As their ally, Germany could be affected.

Asked what he meant by Russia’s further plans, Wadephul pointed to Putin’s earlier statement that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century.

"If that was the greatest catastrophe, then he probably wants to correct it. This concerns Ukraine, as well as Georgia, Moldova and the Baltic states," he said.

Germany’s obligations

Speaking about Germany’s obligations as a NATO member, Wadephul said that if an adversary crossed the borders of Poland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, this would also be considered an attack on Germany.

"Although such a border violation would then have to be officially established through the relevant procedure, it is, in principle, our obligation, and Germany is committed to it," Wadephul said.

Russia’s hybrid attacks

Germany is already facing hybrid attacks from Russia, Wadephul said.

He mentioned drone incidents in Leipzig and noted that cyberattacks are taking place "constantly."

However, Wadephul added that these incidents were hostile and could be a precursor to something more serious.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Germany expects talks on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine to take place "soon." The country wants to take part in them.

Wadephul also held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The German politician explained that the meeting took place at the request of colleagues.
