Germany to send new air defense packages to Ukraine in September, Zelenskyy says

Germany will provide Ukraine with new aid packages in September to strengthen its air defenses. The deliveries will be part of continued support for Ukraine's defense system against Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
What Zelenskyy and Merz discussed
Zelenskyy said he had a conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during which the two sides discussed the Russian attack on the airfield in Leipzig.
The Ukrainian president called the incident another manifestation of Russian escalation and noted the German side's response.
According to Zelenskyy, Merz informed him about the measures Germany had already taken in connection with the incident.
In turn, the Ukrainian president said Kyiv was ready to provide Berlin with the necessary assistance, taking into account Ukraine's experience and expertise.
New agreement
Special attention during the conversation was given to the Drone Deal. According to Zelenskyy, the teams of the two countries are finalizing the text of the agreement.
He stressed that the document should expand the capabilities to protect both Ukraine and Germany.
The two sides also discussed the content of the future agreement and the timing of its signing. In addition, Zelenskyy and Merz agreed to hold an in-person meeting.
New packages coming in September
Zelenskyy thanked the German chancellor for supporting Ukraine and for his leadership in protecting the lives of Ukrainians. The president also announced new air defense deliveries.
"There will be new air defense packages from Germany this month," Zelenskyy said, emphasizing the importance of continued German assistance.
At the end of August, Russian forces significantly increased the number of drone launches against Ukraine. Around 1,500 drones were used over four days, approximately 800 of which were jet-powered Shahed drones. Against this backdrop, Ukraine's air defense system was tasked with improving its effectiveness against such targets during the autumn period.
