Berlin urges strong response to US–Russia nuclear rhetoric. Concern voiced by former German Social Democratic Party leader Rolf Mützenich, reports Spiegel.

In a comment to the publication, the politician described the verbal exchange between US President Donald Trump and Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev as "not only insensitive and reckless, but also irresponsible."

He recalled the tragedy of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, stressing that "the use of nuclear weapons is not something to joke about."

Mützenich also criticized the lack of response from German politicians to Trump's statements.

"If a sitting president, especially a partner in a joint military alliance, speaks about this publicly in such a brazen and foolish manner, I would expect a clear opposition from the federal government," he said.

Trump's ultimatum and Medvedev's threats

On July 28, US President Donald Trump revised his previous ultimatum to the Kremlin regarding a peace deal with Ukraine, shortening the given timeframe from 50 to 10 days — until August 8.

The Kremlin responded that it would continue the so-called special military operation, and Medvedev called Trump's demand a step toward war between Russia and the United States.

In response, Trump advised Medvedev to watch his words and added that he was "entering very dangerous territory."

Following that, the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council published a post in which he urged the American president to remember "his favorite zombie movies," as well as how dangerous the non-existent Dead Hand system could be.

In turn, Trump responded to Medvedev's nuclear threats by ordering the deployment of two nuclear submarines "in appropriate regions."
