Germany significantly increases defense spending from 2024 onwards
Germany will achieve the NATO target of spending 2% of its GDP on defense for the first time in 2024. The country will continue to adhere to this strategy in the future, states Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz
"Germany will reach the NATO target of spending 2% of economic output on defense this year - and will continue to reach it in the following years," Scholz said at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Berlin.
According to him, Germany currently has funds from a special defense fund totaling 100 billion euros, of which 80% has already been allocated. At the same time, the German armed forces are already capable of fulfilling orders with deadlines by the end of the 2020s and 2030s.
"Germany will have the highest defense spending in Europe," added the Chancellor of Germany.
Aid from Germany to Ukraine
Germany is one of Ukraine's key allies following the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion.
Berlin has already provided the Ukrainian military with Patriot and IRIS-T air defense missile systems, Leopard 2 tanks, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and many other pieces of equipment.
On January 31, Germany delivered a new package of military aid to Ukraine, including missiles for air defense systems, all-terrain vehicles, and armored personnel carriers.
Additionally, Germany's Health Minister, Karl Lauterbach, assured Ukraine of further aid and cooperation in the field of healthcare.
