Germany says EU may impose sanctions over Russian 'elections' in occupied territories
The European Union may impose sanctions for holding so-called "elections" in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, according to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Guardian reports.
A spokesperson of the ministry clarified that sanctions could be imposed against those responsible for pseudo-elections.
"Elections" in the occupied territories
On September 8-10, Russians held "elections" in the occupied territories. By doing this, the aggressor wanted to allegedly legitimize control over the seized territories of Ukraine.
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, called for severe sanctions against Russia during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said it would initiate the inclusion of the fact of conducting illegal elections in resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
The EU's Permanent Representative to the UN, Olof Skoog, promised that the political leadership of Russia and others involved in the "elections" would face consequences.
