Germany's incoming foreign minister vows to continue supporting Ukraine

Germany will continue to support Ukraine. It should be clear to Russia's Vladimir Putin that Berlin will continue to stand by Kyiv, says the future head of the German Foreign Ministry, Johann Wadephul.
Johann Wadephul says it should be clear to everyone, especially Vladimir Putin, that Germany will stand by Ukraine, support Ukraine, and offer it the opportunity to be on equal footing with Russia.
He added that Berlin plans to establish a dialogue with the administration of United States President Donald Trump to convey its position on supporting Ukraine in the ongoing war.
According to him, Germany plans to explain to Washington why it is in the US's interest to have a strong Ukraine as part of the European community.
On April 28, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany proposed ministers who would work under the leadership of future Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Among them is Johann Wadephul, who will soon head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Germany's support for Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany has been one of Ukraine's key partners. Berlin provides significant military, financial, and humanitarian aid. The list of supplies includes air defense systems, armored vehicles, ammunition, and more. In addition, Germany has accepted Ukrainian refugees.
In the political sphere, Germany has consistently supported sanctions pressure on Russia and advocated for Ukraine's integration into European structures, including membership in the European Union.
In mid-April, Germany updated its list of military aid to Ukraine. At that time, the list included three Zuzana self-propelled artillery systems, missiles for IRIS-T, and ammunition.
