Germany's Ambassador to Ukraine to head German intelligence - Spiegel

The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is preparing to change its leadership, Spiegel reports.
Martin Jäger, the current German Ambassador to Ukraine, is to head the agency. This decision has allegedly already been approved by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The change of the BND leadership is part of the personnel policy of the new ruling coalition. The BND is directly subordinated to the Federal Chancellery, so the decision to appoint a new president belongs to the head of government.
The government has not officially commented on the rotation, but according to Spiegel, it has already been agreed upon.
The current president of the BND, Bruno Kahl, will leave the service and take up diplomatic work. He is expected to head the German Embassy in the Vatican.
According to Jäger, the BND needs large-scale reform, including increased funding and expanded technical capabilities for spying abroad.
Martin Jäger
He has been the head of the German Embassy in Kyiv since the summer of 2023 and has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine amid a full-scale war with Russia.
Jäger also has experience working in the German government, including the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Development.
He is considered a consistent technocrat with a deep understanding of international security.
Bruno Kahl, the head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has stated that Russia will not stop with plans to invade Ukraine. And the reason is that Moscow is increasingly doubting the Alliance's ability to act as a united front.
For example, Berlin believes that after Ukraine, the Kremlin may challenge the entire Alliance.
