Germany preparing emergency military aid for Ukraine amid worsening frontline situation
Germany intends to approve military aid to Ukraine of about €400 million. The funds need to be allocated immediately due to the deteriorating situation at the front, reports Reuters.
“In view of the continuously deteriorating military situation in Ukraine, there is a serious risk that Ukraine, without significantly increased material support, could be defeated in its defense campaign,” the Ministry of Finance said in a letter.
The Finance Ministry, at the request of the Defense Ministry, is asking the budget committee of the lower house of parliament to approve the additional spending.
“The resulting unplanned need of around 397 million euros has only become concrete in the last few weeks to the extent that it meets the constitutional and budgetary requirements of an unplanned need,” the letter says.
The Ministry of Finance says this must be met immediately so that the measures can be implemented in 2024 and have an impact during the remaining part of the year.
In 2024, the budget of German aid to Ukraine amounted to about €8 billion.
German assistance
In August, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported that no new funding requests for Ukraine would be received at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. About €8 billion has already been allocated for military aid to Ukraine in 2024, and the €4 billion budgeted for 2025 has been blocked.
In September, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed hope that the government would allocate additional funds for supplying weapons to Ukraine in 2024.
