Germany intends to significantly strengthen measures to protect against Russian sabotage and other hybrid attacks, according to Bild.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt presented a set of measures to strengthen the country's defenses against hybrid threats.
The plan calls for:
- Countering drone attacks and acts of sabotage at critical infrastructure sites
- Strengthening cybersecurity
- Identifying spies and potential terrorists.
One of the proposed measures is the expansion of the federal police's mobile units, which will specialize in countering drones. These units will be able to move quickly between regions and will have helicopters and specialized equipment at their disposal.
They will be used to secure the airspace above key transportation hubs, including airports and train stations, as well as over the government district in Berlin.
The units' mission will be not only to detect and intercept drones but also to neutralize those that may be carrying explosives.
Another initiative concerns companies responsible for critical infrastructure. Water utilities, energy companies, and representatives of the defense industry may be granted additional legal authority to counter drones. This will allow them to respond to threats independently, without waiting for government forces to arrive.
They plan to focus particularly on modern technologies. German authorities want to make greater use of artificial intelligence, biometric facial recognition systems, and video surveillance, particularly at train stations. These technologies are intended to help detect weapons, suspicious behavior, and individuals who may be suspected of planning attacks or engaging in espionage.
Another focus will be on strengthening cybersecurity. Germany plans to create a national Cyberdome, an extensive network of digital sensors designed to detect cyberattack attempts and help block them.
Germany is preparing a large-scale plan to retaliate against Russia and is involving Ukraine in it.
In light of recent events, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced new air defense packages from Germany.
