Germany plans to become leading drone manufacturer

Germany plans to develop a strong drone industry. This will help support Ukraine, strengthen national defense, and protect critical infrastructure, states the country’s Minister of Economy, Katherina Reiche, according to RND.
"Those who want to dominate the skies must build it. Germany must become a leading hub for drone development and production," she said, recalling recent events in both Ukraine and Germany.
She noted that strengthening Germany’s defense capabilities requires a rapid scale-up of drone production and continuous technological advancement.
"To achieve this, we must mobilize all available resources, including through new alliances — between industry, mid-sized businesses, startups, and research institutions. Europe’s security is also determined in German workshops," Reiche emphasized.
She stressed that drones are a key technology not only for the defense sector but also for civilian applications.
According to her, in the civilian sector, drones can monitor and protect critical infrastructure, including airports, ports, pipelines, oil refineries, substations, data centers, and hospitals.
Drones over Germany
On October 4, Munich International Airport was halted for the second consecutive night due to reports of drones near the runways.
Earlier, on the evening of October 2, unidentified drones were spotted near the airport, prompting a temporary suspension of operations.
Subsequently, the airport was closed, and the runways were deemed unavailable for use for safety reasons.
RBC-Ukraine previously reported that European countries are continuing discussions on airspace safety. A series of drone sightings has led to airport shutdowns and sparked criticism of EU leadership.
