Germany plans to allocate additional €3 billion in aid to Ukraine, frozen by Scholz

The winner of the German parliamentary elections, Friedrich Merz, stated that his country would allocate an additional 3 billion euros in aid to Ukraine. These funds had been frozen by Olaf Scholz, Le Monde informs.
According to Merz, he will hold talks with outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz to resolve the issue of additional military aid to Ukraine.
Merz stated that this additional aid would amount to over 3 billion euros.
"We expect the funds to be allocated quickly," he said.
These funds were planned last year but were frozen by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Meanwhile, the conservative and social-democratic parties of Germany, which are negotiating the formation of the future government, have announced their intention to make unprecedented investments of several hundred billion euros to strengthen the country's defense and economy amid the threat of a rupture in relations with the United States.

On Sunday, February 23, early elections to the Bundestag were held in Germany. According to exit poll results, Merz's party won the election: the CDU, together with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), received 29% of the votes.
Earlier, Merz expressed his position on Ukraine, calling for Kyiv's participation in peace talks with Russia.
On January 10, media reports revealed that Germany was preparing new large military aid packages for Ukraine, which could be provided in the first half of 2025. These packages would include, among other things, air defense systems, tanks, and howitzers.
On the same day, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was reportedly against allocating an additional 3 billion euros in aid to Ukraine.
