Germany intends to approve €3 billion of military aid to Ukraine

The Budget Committee of the German Parliament called on Finance Minister Joerg Kukies to approve additional military aid to Ukraine. It is about the amount of 3 billion euros, Reuters reports.
According to the agency, the request was approved by the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Free Democrats (FDP), while representatives of the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens, abstained from voting.
The Committee cannot decide on additional aid to Ukraine without the approval of the Minister of Finance, but in practice, the Ministry usually approves requests approved by the Committee.
Budget committee members from the CDU and SPD have stated that there are sufficient funds in the budget for this request, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz also favors additional military aid, but still insists that it can only be financed with an exception to the debt brake to allow additional borrowing.
Germany's military aid for Ukraine
These funds are in addition to the €8 billion budgeted for Ukraine in 2024. German aid to Ukraine has been reduced to €4 billion in 2025, as the country hopes that Kyiv will be able to meet most of its military needs with a $50 billion loan approved by the G7.
