The Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, mentioned the war in Ukraine in his Christmas speech, calling on Europeans to show unity, Welt reports.
According to Steinmeier, under the current circumstances, European countries must be prepared to make significant efforts to protect a just peace and shared values, particularly in the context of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
"We need the courage to always start anew," the president said in a pre-recorded address. He noted that this applies both to the major challenges society faces and to the small tasks in which everyone does their best.
Steinmeier emphasized that celebrating Christmas symbolizes light in the darkness, making life more anticipated, joyful, warm, and full of hope.
"With such confidence, we have the power to act for our world and for our fellow human beings," he said.
The president also stressed the importance of solidarity, which applies not only to family and friends but also to people suffering from war.
"It is especially important to remember the Ukrainians, against whom Russia has been waging war for nearly four years," Steinmeier said.
He added that recent negotiations on paths to peace are received by the public with hope, but also with skepticism and concern.
"There have always been, and still are, signs of hope and reasons for confidence," the president emphasized.
Steinmeier underscored that Europeans have recognized their strength and values — freedom, human dignity, just peace, and democratic self-determination — which they will not relinquish, neither for themselves nor for their partners and friends.
Germany has stated there are no signs that Putin is ready for peace with Ukraine.
Indeed, last week, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin openly stated that Russia seeks to achieve its military objectives in Ukraine by any means necessary.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Putin has effectively declared his intention to make the coming year “a year of war.”
