German Parliament to consider proposal to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine
The German Parliament will once again consider a proposal to begin supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. The initiative will be put to a vote by the Free Democratic Party (FDP), stated FDP parliamentary leader Christian Dürr, according to Tagesschau.
The proposal will be presented to the Bundestag for consideration as early as next week.
"The US government is taking decisive steps by allowing the use of ATACMS missiles. Germany must follow this example and supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine," he stated.
Christian Lindner, leader of the FDP and recently dismissed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz from his role as Finance Minister, also expressed support for providing Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
"The Chancellor has consistently opposed unilateral actions. Now he finds himself isolated. The US and other nations are leading the way. Germany must follow," Lindner said.
Taurus for Ukraine
Germany refuses to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles because Chancellor Olaf Scholz is against it.
On February 22 this year, the German Parliament approved a draft resolution urging the government to start supplying long-range weapons. However, the document did not specifically mention Taurus missiles.
The renewed proposal to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles comes after the US approved the use of ATACMS long-range missiles by Ukrainian forces to strike targets on Russian territory.
