German Foreign Minister supports deployment of US missiles in Germany
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock supported the deployment of US long-range missiles in Germany.
She noted that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin is constantly expanding his arsenal of threats to freedom in Europe. Therefore, it is necessary to use additional means of defense.
“We have to protect ourselves and our Baltic partners from this, including through increased deterrence and additional countermeasures,” Baerbock said.
According to her, not to do so would be not only irresponsible but also naive “in the face of an icy and calculating Kremlin.”
Baerbock said that Putin violated disarmament treaties and the common European peace architecture years ago.
“He wants to frighten us, put us under pressure, and divide our societies,” the minister said.
The newspaper writes that although Germany wants different relations with Russia, Baerbock said Putin's Russia is currently the biggest security threat to both Germany and peace in Europe.
“The people of Ukraine defend this world every single day,” she added.
According to Annalena Baerbock, assistance to Ukraine is not a charitable gesture. She emphasized that a contribution to Ukraine is an investment in the security of Europe amid the Russian threat.
In addition, Baerbock warned of serious consequences for Germany and NATO if they do not support Ukraine in its defense campaign against Russia. The minister believes that if they stop helping Ukraine, Putin's troops will be on the border with Poland. Thus, the war will soon be on the territory of the EU and NATO.
