German opposition leader and CDU/CSU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz said he supports providing Ukraine with long-range weapons. He noted that these weapons should have the ability to hit military targets in Russia, Ukrinform reports

According to him, there is a very intense discussion in Germany about military support for Ukraine. And in particular, what kind of weapons can be provided to Ukraine.

Merz noted that there is now a consensus in Germany that military support should continue to be provided to end this war as soon as possible. He said that no one wants the war to last for who knows how long.

“The position of our faction is clear -- we want to provide your Armed Forces with the capability to target military bases [in Russia] -- not the civilian population and infrastructure, but the sites from which the war against your country is being waged,” the politician assured.

He recalled that a few weeks ago he had said in the Bundestag that by limiting the range of weapons, “we are forcing you to fight with one hand tied behind your back.”

Elections in Germany

In early November, the ruling coalition in Germany collapsed after the resignation of Finance Minister Christian Lindner. On November 8, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier officially signed decrees dismissing ministers.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced his intention to initiate a vote of confidence in the Bundestag. Soon after, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) officially nominated Scholz as its candidate for chancellor in the next federal elections.

In early December, Scholz arrived on a visit to Kyiv. At the time, he said that Germany was discussing whether to provide Ukraine with certain systems, including Taurus missiles.
