US President Donald Trump could be the key to peace between Russia and Ukraine if he puts pressure on Moscow, stated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, CNN reports.

"We both agree on this war and how terrible this war is going on, and we are both looking for ways to stop it very soon. And I told the President … he is the key person in the world who can really do that now by putting pressure on Russia," German Chancellor said.

Merz noted that Germany remains committed to Ukraine. He pointed out that the horrific scenes from the battlefield were caused by "Russian weapons against Ukraine".

"Ukraine is only targeting military targets, not civilians, not energy infrastructure. So this is the difference, and that’s the reason why we are trying to do more on Russia," Trump said.

Merz's visit to the US

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is currently visiting the United States. He has already met with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

During their conversation with journalists, Trump made several statements about Russia's war against Ukraine. In particular, the American leader assured that he stands with Ukraine and wants to stop the killing.

Trump also added that he has set a deadline. If he sees that the war is not coming to an end, sanctions will be imposed on Russia.
