The level of combat readiness of many units of the German armed forces is only 50%. In addition, the army needs to recruit more soldiers, states Bundestag Commissioner for the Armed Forces Eva Högl.

According to the Berlin SPD politician, about 20,000 more men and women are needed to reach the target of 203,000 soldiers. In this regard, she calls for intensified recruitment efforts for the Bundeswehr.

“In addition, many positions are not filled,” Högl said.

Speaking about the actual level of combat readiness, she noted that in many units the figure is only about 50%. The politician warned that “this is clearly not enough” given the tense security situation after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In November, it was reported that Germany had begun large-scale preparations for a potential conflict with Russia. According to experts, the clash could have a more significant impact on the country than the war in Ukraine.
