Georgia risks losing its candidate status for EU membership
The European Commission needs to suspend the candidate status for EU accession granted to Georgia, according to Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius on Twitter (X).
According to him, the ruling party of Georgia, Georgian Dream, failed to ensure that its country meets the candidate status for EU accession.
"The passed law on foreign interference is a step back from democratic principles. I call on the European Commission to suspend candidate status and scale down economic assistance," the MEP wrote.
It's worth noting that yesterday, May 1st, MEP Viola von Cramon called for Georgia to be deprived of its candidate status for EU accession.
What preceded
Recently, the ruling party of Georgia, Georgian Dream, initiated the consideration in parliament of the so-called foreign agents bill. The initiative contradicts democratic principles, as it envisages the government gaining leverage over companies funded from abroad.
A similar law has already been adopted in Russia, which is an authoritarian state.
Yesterday, May 1st, the Georgian parliament passed the foreign agents bill in the second reading. Mass protests took place in Tbilisi, during which law enforcement tried to disperse the demonstrators.
