Geomagnetic red level: Dates sun hits hardest and who needs to prepare
When the strongest magnetic storms are expected in February (photo: Freepik)
The last month of winter will be a serious test for people sensitive to weather changes, as solar activity is expected to be unstable. Fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field can affect not only physical well-being but also emotional state, causing unexplained anxiety or fatigue.
RBC-Ukraine explains when magnetic field fluctuations are expected in February, which days may be the most challenging, and how to protect yourself during these periods.
Forecast by dates until the end of February
February 2026 will feature geomagnetic disturbances of varying intensity. The main peaks are expected in mid- and late-month.
-
7–10 February: The first significant wave. A moderate storm is expected (K-index 4), which may cause headaches and sleep disturbances.
-
13–15 February: A strong solar flare. A powerful magnetic storm is predicted (K-index 5–6). This will be the most dangerous period for people with cardiovascular conditions.
-
24–25 February: Moderate magnetic storm (K-index 4). Possible apathy, decreased performance, and irritability.
-
27–28 February: The month’s final chord. Moderate fluctuations are expected, mostly affecting people with chronic joint conditions.
Detailed forecast for the upcoming weekend
-
6 February: Moderate fluctuations (Kp 4–5) possible in the morning; the situation stabilizes by afternoon.
-
7 February: Noticeable fluctuations up to Kp 4 are possible only in the evening; daytime will be stable.
-
8 February: Moderate magnetic fluctuations (Kp 4) expected in the morning; situation stabilizes by noon.
What are geomagnetic storms, and how do they affect us
Magnetic storms are disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by changes on the Sun (solar flares and solar wind streams). These fluctuations can temporarily affect biological processes and human well-being.
Activity levels are measured using the Kp index:
-
Kp 0–2 – calm;
-
Kp 3–4 – moderate fluctuations;
-
Kp 5+ – magnetic storm;
Even moderate fluctuations more often affect people with cardiovascular or nervous system disorders.
Who is most affected by magnetic storms
The most sensitive groups include:
-
People with cardiovascular diseases;
-
Hypertensive or hypotensive individuals;
-
Weather-sensitive people;
-
Elderly individuals;
-
People with sleep disorders or chronic fatigue;
-
Those under prolonged stress;
Common effects on the body
During geomagnetic fluctuations, the body reacts to changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. Common symptoms include:
-
Sudden increases in blood pressure;
-
Severe migraines that are difficult to relieve;
-
Body aches and exacerbation of old injuries;
-
Difficulty concentrating and emotional swings;
Other possible symptoms:
-
Headaches;
-
Weakness and drowsiness;
-
Irritability;
-
Blood pressure fluctuations;
-
Sleep disturbances;
How to ease symptoms during active periods
Experts recommend:
-
Sleeping 7–9 hours daily;
-
Avoiding physical and emotional overexertion;
-
Drinking plenty of water;
-
Limiting coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol;
-
Spending more time outdoors;
-
Monitoring blood pressure.
People with chronic conditions should consult their doctor and follow prescribed treatments.
