A key component used in many popular gel nail polishes has been banned in most European countries. This decision, which entered into force just a few days ago, could change the beauty industry worldwide, including in Ukraine, reports The Independent.

What is TPO, and why was it banned?

The substance in question is TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), which, as of September 1, 2025, is prohibited for use in cosmetic products within the European Union after its recognition as potentially toxic to humans.

TPO is used in gel polishes as a "photoinitiator." Simply put, it allows the polish to harden quickly under a UV lamp and also helps save its rich color longer.

However, several animal studies have shown that this chemical may cause long-term damage to fertility (the ability to have children). Due to this fact, the European Union decided to ban it as a precautionary measure while further research is being conducted.

Meanwhile, in many countries outside the EU, including the United States, TPO remains unregulated.

What does this mean for salons and clients?

Starting September 1, beauty salons in the 27 EU countries, as well as in Norway and Switzerland, must stop selling and using gel polishes containing TPO and dispose of all existing stock. Manufacturers are now forced to change the formulas of their products immediately.

Industry reaction

The EU decision has sparked mixed reactions. Many in the nail industry oppose the ban. For example, California-based scientific consultant Doug Schoon says, the prohibition of TPO in UV gels "is not supported by a scientifically justified risk assessment. This decision will once again impose unnecessary economic burdens."

Belgian wholesale supplier ASAP Nails and Beauty Supply even created a protest website, claiming the ban is based on a "lack of evidence of harm to humans."

However, trade association representatives note that the industry failed to prove the existence of safer alternatives to TPO, making the ban inevitable.
