Game of Thrones is getting its first movie: Premiere date revealed
A still from the Game of Thrones series
Warner Bros. is preparing a new release for fans of the popular franchise. The film, Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, will be the first feature-length project set in the fantasy universe and will tell the story of legendary conqueror Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros.
What we know about Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest
The film will be directed by Owen Harris, who previously worked on the HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The screenplay will be written by Beau Willimon, the showrunner of House of Cards and one of the writers of the series Andor.
The film is expected to tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the dynasty who conquered most of Westeros roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Aegon the Conqueror has never appeared on screen before. It is not yet known who will portray the character in the film.
Game of Thrones and the Targaryens
The Targaryen dynasty has become a central part of several HBO projects. Its history is at the heart of the series "House of the Dragon," which chronicles a civil war within the family.
The original Game of Thrones series is based on George R. R. Martin's novels. The show ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 and received numerous Emmy Awards.
While viewers wait for Aegon's Conquest, the franchise will continue to expand on television. House of the Dragon has been renewed for a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season.
