Mercedes-Benz is officially joining Europe's defense efforts. The company will produce special vehicles for countering drones based on its popular civilian models, according to CNBC.

The Stuttgart-based company has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the German startup Tytan Technologies. The signing took place during the ILA 2026 International Aerospace Exhibition. Together, they will create mobile air defense systems.

The goal of the project is to develop equipment for effectively engaging drones, and Mercedes-Benz will now provide the technical platform. The company will focus on platforms for protecting people and infrastructure.

The basis for the new systems will be:

  • Legendary G-Class off-road vehicles;
  • Multifunctional Sprinter vans.

These vehicles will become the mobile platform for air defense. Such a step is forced, as Europe's automotive industry is currently going through difficult times.

Who else will work for the military

Mercedes-Benz is not alone in this endeavor. Other giants are also looking toward the military. For example, France's Renault is already developing ground drones. They are suitable for both civilian and military needs. The French also plan to produce aerial drones together with the Turgis Gaillard group.

Volkswagen is also not standing aside. The German concern has already signed an agreement with the Israeli defense company Rafael. They plan to manufacture components for missile defense systems.

Why are auto giants now working for the military?

The reason is a deep structural crisis, the article notes. European manufacturers are losing ground, as demand for electric vehicles is falling faster than expected.

Chinese competitors are closing in, and borrowing costs are rising. The automotive industry is seeking stable revenue, and the defense sector provides that stability.

The transition to military production has not been so difficult because the skills of auto plant workers are easily adaptable. Germany's Ministry of Defense has even created a special platform to connect startups with big business.

What preceded the signing of the memorandum

Earlier, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz confirmed the automaker's desire to start producing defense products. However, this would only be possible if the state's offer made business sense.

The Pentagon has also voiced plans to involve auto giants Ford and GM in weapons production. The US is assessing whether civilian manufacturers can quickly switch to defense orders.
