Change in French government

On September 8, the French National Assembly (lower house of parliament) passed a vote of no confidence in the government headed by François Bayrou. The decision was supported by 194 out of 364 deputies - all opposition parties to Emmanuel Macron, from the far left to the far right, voted for the government's resignation.

The very next day, on September 9, President Macron appointed Sébastien Lecornu, who had served as defense minister in the previous government, as the country's new prime minister. Lecornu then became the fifth prime minister in the last two years.

After the appointment, Macron instructed him to consult with parliamentary forces and present the composition of the new government.

The 39-year-old politician was considered one of Macron's most reliable allies: he has been on his team since 2017, without interruption in any cabinet.

Later, Lecornu set about finding ways to save the state budget. In particular, he refused to cut public holidays.
