French government representative Sophie Primas stated that France does not understand why US President Donald Trump suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was responsible for Russia’s invasion of his country and the subsequent war, Reuters reports.

"We don't understand the logic very well," she told reporters, noting "the diverse, varied and often incomprehensible comments by President Trump."

According to her, over the past few days, Trump has made several remarks about Ukraine without consulting his European allies.

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to hold an informal meeting on Ukraine today with several European leaders and NATO ally Canada, following a similar meeting with the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, the EU, Denmark, and the Netherlands on February 17.

The bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II began in 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine and its European allies were shocked by the decision of Washington and Moscow to hold peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia this week. Ukraine stated that it would not accept an imposed agreement without its consent, a position also confirmed by European leaders.

Meanwhile, Russia has ruled out the possibility of giving up the territories it has seized.

Trump suggested that Ukraine could have prevented the war from happening.

"You should have ended this three years ago. You shouldn't ever start it. You could have made a deal. I could have made a deal for Ukraine. That would have given them almost all of the land, everything, almost all of the land - and no people would have killed, and no city would have been demolished, and no dome wouldn't been downed. But they chose not to do that way," Trump said.
