The agreement with the US on rare earth metals must not contradict Ukraine's path to the European Union. This is one of our country's key positions, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated this during a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

"In this context, it is also important to emphasize that this agreement, for which we have begun negotiations, cannot in any way contradict our path to European integration, our integration into the European Union," Sybiha said.

He noted that this is one of Ukraine's key positions.

Ukraine-US agreement

In February, Ukraine and the US began discussing an agreement regarding rare earth metals. Since then, both sides have been working on terms suitable for Kyiv and Washington.

Recently, it was revealed that the US has presented Ukraine with a new draft agreement.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the new agreement is now comprehensive rather than a framework deal, as it was before.

US Treasury official Scott Bessent stated that the US has prepared a "comprehensive" version of the mineral resources agreement for Ukraine and that the deal could be finalized next week.

Additionally, MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak told RBC-Ukraine that the new agreement on rare earth metals between Ukraine and the US is more commercial in nature and significantly limits Ukraine's rights.

Recently, Ukraine and the US held a technical online meeting regarding the agreement.
