Southwest Airlines is making significant changes to its luggage policy, introducing fees for checked bags for most passengers, USA Today reports.

Starting May 28, 2025, only Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and Business Select fare passengers will still be able to check two bags for free. Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders will receive a credit for one checked bag, while all other travelers will now have to pay for each bag based on weight and size restrictions.

“We see tremendous opportunities to meet our customers’ needs, attract new market segments, and return to the profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan.

These changes are part of a broader strategy to increase revenue. Southwest is also revamping its loyalty program, reducing rewards for budget fares, introducing a new Basic fare with fewer perks, and expanding ticket sales through platforms like Expedia. Additionally, the airline is reducing the flexibility of flight credits, which will now expire within a year.

While Southwest insists it remains committed to customer service, the policy shift has raised concerns among frequent travelers.
