Five EU countries back military bonds to counter Russia’s 'imperial ambitions'
A number of European Union countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, have supported a proposal for joint defense bonds to strengthen the bloc's defense industry, according to Euronews.
According to Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, the move is "a big deal." The Polish minister added that the development of EU defense bonds will help "Europe firmly counteract Russia's imperial ambitions."
Sikorski made this statement during a joint press conference in Warsaw with his counterparts from Germany, Italy, and France.
At the previous meeting, senior diplomats from Spain and the United Kingdom also participated via video link, after which all the attending countries adopted a joint declaration.
Sikorski explained that the ministers of the EU member states "agreed that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security, and that includes a more balanced sharing of the burden among NATO members."
"Putin's Russia will remain one of the most serious security threats, not only to Europe but also to the global order. Its goal remains the permanent destruction of European security architecture," he noted.
During the event, the EU foreign ministers also discussed strengthening Europe's military support for Ukraine and its ties with the United States under the leadership of the new president, Donald Trump.
Earlier, Trump has repeatedly stated that Europe needs to do more to defend itself amid Russia's large-scale military aggression against Ukraine.
Additionally, on November 19, groups of EU countries had signed letters of intent to develop specific types of weapons jointly. This is part of the EU's efforts to enhance cooperation between member states in the defense sector.
