Fitch Ratings predicts prolonged Ukraine war: Ceasefire possible, peace unlikely
The international ratings agency Fitch Ratings predicts that the Russia-Ukraine war will continue into 2025 within its current broad parameters. While a ceasefire is possible, a formal peace agreement remains unlikely, Fitch reports.
“In our view, despite some territorial gains by Russia since end-2023, Western military support and strong resolve should allow Ukraine to prevent significant additional territorial losses,” the agency noted.
Fitch analysts suggest that the stated political goal of the new US administration to end the war could lead to negotiations resulting in a ceasefire. However, they deem a peace agreement unlikely due to the complex concessions required from both sides.
“The parameters of the negotiated ceasefire, including security guarantees for Ukraine and the territories that would remain under Russian control, remain uncertain,” Fitch Ratings added.
Trump’s plans
Earlier, CNN reported that US President-elect Donald Trump’s team aims to push for a ceasefire during Ukraine-Russia negotiations.
Neither Trump nor his current team has yet made substantive proposals directly to Kyiv. Trump is reportedly more focused on domestic issues, which have traditionally been his priority.
In Kyiv, the expectation is that US attention to Ukraine will intensify soon. Sources suggest Trump’s team plans to have a finalized approach to Ukraine by January 20, enabling swift implementation upon assuming office.
