Finland's President has new idea for Trump on helping Ukraine

Europe could offer US President Donald Trump help in protecting the Strait of Hormuz from Iran if he agrees to provide Ukraine with all the necessary support, stated Finnish President Alexander Stubb, according to Politico.

The idea of such a deal with Trump was suggested to Stubb during a question-and-answer session at London’s Chatham House think tank.

"I think it's a really good idea," the Finnish leader responded, adding that he would consider it in more detail and discuss options with his team.

According to the President, he fears that peace talks on Ukraine are quickly approaching a decisive moment, "which could force Kyiv to accept a bad settlement" and cede territory to Russia. The talks could also collapse.

Stubb said he realistically assesses the extent of his influence on Trump after the two "bonded over" a seven-hour meeting that included a round of golf and dinner last year.

"I have no illusions about who can convince President Trump on anything. If I get one idea out of 10 in on Ukraine, I think it’s good," the Finnish leader said.

He expressed hope that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will not "collapse like the negotiations between Iran and the US."

Trump may lose interest in Ukraine

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that US President Donald Trump is losing interest in resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to the outlet, the United States has suspended its active involvement in the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia, as it is now focused on the operation against Iran.

An unnamed EU diplomat told the FT that such a situation would be a "disaster" for Ukraine and the European Union.
