The Ukrainian team, composed of Dmytro Mazurchuk and Oleksandr Shumbarets, took 12th place in the historic debut of the men’s Nordic combined team sprint at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Tough start on the ski jump

The medal race in the team sprint made its Olympic debut at the XXV Winter Games. Mazurchuk and Shumbarets entered history as Ukraine’s first representatives in this event, ultimately finishing 12th.

The competition began with the ski jumping round on the large hill. Both athletes’ scores were combined to determine the time handicap for the cross-country relay.

This stage proved the most challenging for Ukraine: Shumbarets jumped 103 meters (66.4 points), while Mazurchuk managed 93 meters (63.4 points). With a combined total, Ukraine ranked last, 14th, starting the relay 2:36 minutes behind the leaders, Germany.

Breakthrough in cross-country skiing

Despite the significant gap, Ukraine showed determination in the skiing portion. Mazurchuk and Shumbarets overtook two competitors during the race, moving up to 12th place.

Their final gap from the gold medalists was 6:27.2 minutes.

Dramatic fight for gold

The battle for Olympic gold lasted to the final meters. Norwegian athlete Jens Lurås Oftebro narrowly defeated Finland’s Eero Hirvonen at the finish line, winning by just 0.5 seconds. Austria took bronze.

For Oftebro, this was his third gold medal at the 2026 Games, solidifying his status as one of the Olympics’ standout athletes.
