Europe should be represented in negotiations with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin by someone who understands the "Russian soul," said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a broadcast on Slovak television channel HNtelevízia.

Fico on private conversations in Europe

Fico said that while European politicians may publicly criticize contacts with Moscow, many privately express interest in the Kremlin’s position and the possibility of negotiations.

According to the Slovak Prime Minister, after official meetings, many politicians continue discussing Russia in private conversations.

"The funniest part of these discussions is that on the one hand they criticize me, but believe me, when I go to the bathroom, they follow me there and ask: Robert, what is Putin saying?" Fico said.

Talks with Russia

Fico stated that he does not understand why some European countries refuse direct dialogue with Moscow. In his view, negotiations are impossible without communication with the Russian side.

He stressed that Europe will eventually have to find a format for talks with the Kremlin and discuss possible settlement options.

"For God’s sake, why don’t you go and talk to him? We must maintain normal dialogue with Russia," Fico said.

Statement about Schröder and the "Russian soul"

The Slovak Prime Minister also commented on Vladimir Putin’s remarks regarding the possible role of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a mediator in negotiations.

According to Fico, Putin prefers people who are familiar with Russian politics and understand the country’s specifics.

"Putin just wants a person who at least somewhat understands this Russian soul," Fico commented.

He added that, in his opinion, it would be impossible to send someone to negotiations who has no understanding of Russia or its political system.

Earlier, Fico also said that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is truly interested in ending the war through negotiations, he should personally contact Vladimir Putin to begin dialogue.

The Slovak Prime Minister also reportedly signaled in Moscow that the Ukrainian President may be open to leader-level negotiations on ending the war.
