F-16s are useless without weapons: Ukrainian pilot reveals missile shortage
Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets are being forced to conserve missiles and, during some missions, use their onboard cannons to shoot down Russian aerial targets because of a critical shortage of ammunition, a Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilot with the call sign "Phantom" said in an interview with Newsmax.
Missile shortage and new tactics
According to the pilot, Ukraine’s Defense Forces are facing a critical shortage of US-made missiles, including Patriot and AIM-120 missiles, which are essential for effective interception of enemy targets.
The lack of ammunition is putting defensive air missions at risk.
"Any aircraft without weapons is a useless tool," Phantom emphasized.

Because of the shortage, pilots are being forced to ration their missiles and, in some cases, rely on their aircraft’s onboard guns to destroy Russian drones and cruise missiles.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s allies continue to look for ways to strengthen the country’s air defenses amid the ammunition shortage.
In particular, Belgium will provide Ukraine with ammunition designed to counter jet-powered Shahed drones. The ammunition is intended for use by F-16 fighter jets and will help them more effectively destroy enemy drones.
In addition, the supply and joint production of weapons are being discussed at the highest state levels.
During his visit to the United States, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with representatives of F-16 and Patriot missile manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The talks focused on expanding cooperation, sharing technology and increasing deliveries of critical weapons to Ukraine.
