The green tops of strawberries — the calyx and stem — are edible. They are not toxic and contain antioxidants and vitamin C, but they have a slightly bitter taste, so they may not appeal to everyone, according to Southern Living.
Benefits of strawberry leaves
Dietitian Chelsea Edwards says that strawberry leaves and stems are not only edible but also beneficial. The green tops are rich in vitamin C, although the fruit itself contains a higher concentration.
In addition, the leaves contain significantly more polyphenols than the fruit. These act as antioxidants in the body and may help reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties.
According to PubMed data, consuming strawberries with their leaves has several biological benefits, including strong antioxidant activity, antibacterial and antifungal effects, and anti-inflammatory action.
How to eat strawberry leaves
If you plan to consume the green tops, make sure both the leaves and berries are thoroughly washed before eating. They have a slightly bitter, grassy taste.
The simplest way is to eat the berry with the top still attached. This is normal and safe if the strawberry is well-washed.
You can also blend the berries with the tops. The taste is barely noticeable, but it adds fiber.
When it is better not to eat them
- If the berries were treated with pesticides (the tops accumulate more residues)
- If the taste is unpleasant
Who should avoid them
- People with stomach problems (gastritis, peptic ulcer disease). Green parts contain tannins, which may irritate the stomach lining.
- Small children. The green leaves are harder to digest, and their rough texture may cause discomfort.
- If the berries are non-organic or of questionable origin. The tops accumulate more pesticide residues, so it is better to remove them.
- People with individual intolerance. If nausea or discomfort occurs after consumption, they should not be eaten.
