Amid rising tensions in the Caribbean and threats from the US, Russia has begun evacuating the families of its diplomats from Venezuela, reports Associated Press.

The escalation around Venezuela prompted Moscow to take its first security-related measures for diplomatic personnel in a long time.

The decision comes amid increased US activity in the region and growing uncertainty about how events will unfold.

Russian Foreign Ministry evacuates diplomats’ families from Venezuela

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun evacuating the families of its diplomats from Venezuela, starting Friday, with priority given to women and children.

According to a source in European intelligence, Russian officials describe the current situation in the country as very grim.

The evacuation comes amid increased US political activity toward Caracas. On Monday, President Donald Trump plans to meet with key national security officials.

This follows intensified efforts by the US Coast Guard to intercept oil tankers in the Caribbean as part of pressure on Nicolás Maduro’s government.

The meeting is expected to include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Navy Secretary John Phelan. The White House has announced an important statement, and Trump has previously revealed plans to build two large new military ships under the Golden Fleet concept.

Against this backdrop, the evacuation of Russian diplomats’ families is seen as a signal of serious risks and the potential for further deterioration in Venezuela.

Venezuelan authorities have also decided to deploy naval forces to escort oil tankers leaving national ports, following US statements about possibly blocking Venezuelan oil exports - a move Caracas interprets as a potential threat to maritime security.

US interception of Venezuelan oil tankers is viewed in Washington as a deliberate political measure and a direct signal to Nicolás Maduro’s regime that it must step down.
