American actress Eva Marie Saint, known for her roles in On the Waterfront and North by Northwest, has died at the age of 102. Reports say that the star died on October 6 at her home in Los Angeles.
What is known about the actress
Eva Marie Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in New Jersey. Her acting career began not in Hollywood, but in television and theater. After studying at Bowling Green State University, she moved to New York and gradually began landing roles in radio, television, and on stage.
In the 1940s, Saint became one of the actresses working during the early years of American television. She appeared in television productions and series.
Among her early credits were a television adaptation of A Christmas Carol and the series One Man's Family. Working in live television became an important training ground for the actress, who would later make the transition to the big screen.

A debut that immediately brought her an Oscar
Saint's first major film role was Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan's 1954 drama On the Waterfront. She played the love interest of Marlon Brando's character, dockworker Terry Malloy.

The film won eight Academy Awards, with Saint taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She thus received Hollywood's highest film honor for her very first movie role.
Her performance became one of the most memorable film debuts in Hollywood history. At the same time, Saint did not rush to turn her success into an endless stream of film roles. She turned down some major offers and deliberately made time for her family.

After the birth of her son Darrell in 1955, the actress took a break from her career.
Eva Marie Saint's career spanned many decades and included theater, radio, television, film, and audio productions. Her journey began during the early days of television, continued with two iconic Hollywood films of the 1950s, and extended into the 21st century.
Eva Marie Saint was married to television director and producer Jeffrey Hayden until his death in 2016. The couple had two children.
Her name will forever be associated primarily with two roles — Edie Doyle in On the Waterfront and Eve Kendall in North by Northwest. At the same time, Saint's career was far broader: for decades, she moved between different formats and generations of audiences, remaining active in the industry well into her later years.
