European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno has agreed to end her hunger strike following appeals from the Ukrainian side, amid progress in resolving the humanitarian crisis in the city of Oleshky, temporarily occupied by Russia, according to Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.
The Ukrainian ombudsman spoke with the European politician and urged her to end her protest. He said the hunger strike had begun to pose a serious threat to her life and health.
During the talks, Lubinets informed Picierno about an agreement on a local ceasefire facilitated by US First Lady Melania Trump.
The ceasefire is intended to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians.
In particular, the parties agreed to de-mine the road to Oleshky, deliver food, water, medicine, and equipment for the local hospital, and ensure the safe movement of civilians.
"Protecting human life and ensuring access to humanitarian assistance for the people of Oleshky remain our top priorities," Lubinets emphasized.
He also thanked the European Parliament vice-president for her principled stance.
"We are profoundly grateful to Pina Picierno for her unwavering commitment, strong principles, and steadfast support for our people living under temporary occupation," the commissioner said.
As previously reported, the Defense Forces of Ukraine announced a ceasefire in Oleshky starting October 27.
The ceasefire will allow a humanitarian operation in the city.
As reported by RBC-Ukraine, Ukraine and Russia agreed to a ceasefire in Oleshky, allowing civilians to evacuate and essential medicine, water, and food to be delivered.
