European Parliament calls to deprive Georgia of status of candidate for EU membership
Georgia should be deprived of its candidate status for accession to the European Union (EU) due to the use of violence against protesters in Tbilisi, according to the Twitter (X) account of MEP Viola von Cramon.
As the MEP noted, violence against protesters requires specific consequences.
Specifically, she suggests:
- Halting funding for projects.
- Imposing sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling party Georgian Dream.
- Banning entry into the EU for deputies who supported the bill on foreign agents.
Protests in Georgia
Protests continue in Georgia over the bill on foreign agents. Just recently, the Georgian parliament supported the document in the first reading, which sparked a sharp reaction from the public, the EU, and NATO. Officials noted that this step by Tbilisi would pose a threat to its path to European integration.
Yesterday, on April 30, protests escalated into clashes with law enforcement officers, during which 6 police officers were injured. In particular, more than 60 citizens were detained.
Commenting on the use of force by law enforcement, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell condemned it and called on Tbilisi to ensure the right to peaceful assembly for its citizens.
