European Parliament calls on NATO to invite Ukraine to join the alliance
The press service of the European Parliament reports that the Members call on NATO Countries to fulfill commitments to Ukraine and invite it to the Alliance.
It is stated that the resolution was approved with 425 votes in favor, 38 against, and 42 abstentions. MEPs expressed hope that the "accession process will start after the war is over and be finalized as soon as possible".
Until Ukraine attains full membership, the EU and NATO allies must closely cooperate with Ukraine in order to establish temporary frameworks for security guarantees that should be implemented immediately after the war.
The Parliament emphasizes that Ukraine's integration into NATO and the EU will strengthen regional and global security, as well as the ties between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community.
Ukraine's NATO accession
Ukraine aspires to join the Alliance once hostilities have ceased. However, the country seeks a political decision on the possibility of membership at the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12.
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine expects to receive a "clear membership action plan."
Furthermore, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs clear security guarantees from the West, which should be documented on paper. Ukraine aims to obtain security guarantees from NATO until it becomes a full-fledged member of the Alliance.
