The EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has put forward an initiative for additional artillery ammunition for Ukraine. In her statement before a European Council meeting, Kallas has proposed providing shells worth €5 billion.

In particular, EU's top diplomat welcomed US President Donald Trump's statement regarding additional air defense for Ukraine, calling such actions "extremely important."

In light of this, Kallas proposed providing Ukraine with ammunition worth €5 billion as part of a broader initiative for military assistance to Ukraine, which could total up to €40 billion in 2025. This proposal has not yet received approval from all EU member states.

"And of course today we are discussing what more can we do. So for Ukraine, but also for our own defense, I've proposed the initiative to really go with the ones that President Zelenskyy needs - ammunition in the amount of five billion euros. So we should at least start to do really concrete steps, not only on words but also indeed that we are helping Ukraine right now. Because the stronger they are on the battlefield the stronger they are behind the negotiation table," the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stated.

New EU aid for Ukraine

On February 18, Politico reported that EU countries were preparing a military aid package for Ukraine worth at least 6 billion euros. Later, the media resource revealed that the aid amount had increased to 20 billion euros.

By early March, the reports indicated that the new EU plan was "on pause" due to Hungary blocking it. Recently, Kaja Kallas announced broad support for her initiative to defend Ukraine with up to 40 billion euros.

As previously reported, the EU plans to create a military aid fund for Ukraine worth 40 billion euros without Hungary to avoid its veto.
