EU to provide Ukraine with aid package amid Russian shelling of energy infrastructure
Russia continues to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The European Union will allocate a new humanitarian aid package to Kyiv of 40 million euros ($44.43 million), according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"Russia is relentlessly targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Temperatures will soon go down, so we are stepping up our humanitarian aid to Ukrainians in need. With a new €40 million package for repair works, electricity, heating and shelter," she writes.
EU support for Ukraine
The EU has been actively supporting Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion through several important initiatives and activities. For example, the political bloc provides financial assistance to support the Ukrainian economy and rebuild infrastructure.
In particular, it provides military assistance by supplying Ukraine with weapons, equipment, and other resources necessary for defense and beyond. This also includes education and training of the Ukrainian military.
The EU has also imposed economic sanctions against Russia to put pressure on the Kremlin to stop its aggression.
In August, Ukraine received a tranche of €4.2 billion ($4.67 billion) from the EU under the Ukraine Facility program.
