EU to impose sanctions on Iran for supplying missiles to Russia
European Union leaders are poised to take new and significant measures against Iran amid reports of Tehran supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine, according to Reuters.
The European Council calls on third parties to immediately halt their material support for Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, as outlined in the draft conclusions of the upcoming summit next week.
Iran has reportedly provided Russia with a substantial number of powerful land-to-land ballistic missiles, deepening military cooperation between the two countries under US sanctions, according to six sources.
"Reports that Iran may transfer ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia for use against Ukraine are very concerning," the draft conclusions of the March 21-22 summit says.
The EU stresses its readiness to respond swiftly and in coordination with international partners, including with new and significant measures against Iran.
The conclusions also mention that leaders will urge EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell and the European Commission to prepare further sanctions against Belarus, North Korea, and Iran.
Foreign arms in Russia
Iran has become the first country to supply arms to Russia for the war against Ukraine. Russian military has been consistently receiving Shahed drones from Iran, which have been used to attack Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Additionally, Iran has assisted Russia in establishing its own production of these drones.
Apart from Iran, North Korea is also supplying weapons to Russia. Initially, Russia received artillery shells and ammunition for MLRS from North Korea. However, it has recently been revealed that North Korea has transferred its ballistic missiles to Russia, which Russian troops have already used to attack Ukraine.
