The European Union is set to adopt its 19th sanctions package against Russia in early September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Von der Leyen stressed that as long as the war continues in Ukraine, Europe will maintain diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia.

"We will continue to strengthen sanctions. We have adopted 18 packages so far, and we are advancing preparation for the 19th. This package will be forthcoming in early September," von der Leyen said.

Sanctions against Russia

Since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the EU has implemented 18 sanctions packages. The 19th is now in preparation.

A few weeks ago, Ukraine's Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, said Kyiv had submitted proposals to Brussels outlining what should be included in the new list of restrictive measures.

Yesterday, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys urged the adoption of the 19th sanctions package and called for increased support for Ukraine.
