The EU will send its envoy to Washington for negotiations after US President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs on all countries worldwide and later raised them to 15%, according to Reuters.
Brussels decided to send Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, to Washington.
“We will have a very clear European position on this, because tariff policy is a matter for the European Union, not individual member states, and I will go to Washington with a coordinated European position,” the politician said.
Merz noted that Trump’s decision likely leaves sectoral tariffs in place, such as those on cars, steel, and aluminum. He also reminded that Donald Trump had introduced a new 10% import duty on goods from all countries, which he later raised to 15% on Saturday.
“The biggest poison for the economies of Europe and the U.S. is this constant uncertainty about tariffs. And this uncertainty must end,” Merz said.
Trump introduced global tariffs
A few days ago, Trump announced the introduction of global tariffs for all countries worldwide — up to 10%. Certain imported goods were excluded from the list, but most products were subject to the new rules.
However, the Supreme Court of the US canceled Trump’s initiative, ruling that he had exceeded his authority.
Donald Trump expressed anger over the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the tariffs he had imposed, but stated that he would raise all existing tariffs to 15%, claiming the court’s ruling allowed him to do so.
