EU Parliament President says EU needs to create its own security organization in addition to NATO
The European Union should establish its own security organization in addition to NATO, according to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
She emphasized that the EU must always be stronger, more consistent, and more effective.
Roberta Metsola stated that she spoke the same when it came to creating a true security and defense union — one that had long been called for, which would complement NATO and not compete with the EU.
She noted that Europe stands on the brink of an extremely unstable situation due to the full-scale war in Ukraine, instigated by Russia. She stressed that the European Union must be prepared for anything, regardless of who enters the White House after the US presidential election.
European Parliament President added that in January, there would be a new president and, consequently, a new administration. She noted that a new Senate and a new House of Representatives would also emerge, which were partners in voting on financial assistance for Ukraine. She expressed hope that they could continue to work together.
As a reminder, in July 2024, Roberta Mecola was re-elected as President of the European Parliament. It is known that she will hold this position for almost two and a half more years.
