European Parliament elections
At the beginning of May, the European Union held elections to the European Parliament, which is set to approve the President of the European Commission. The Parliament will be able to hold a vote only after the majority of EU country leaders and governments officially propose candidates.
This process is expected to conclude at the European Council meeting on September 27-28, where key positions are likely to be allocated among the main political forces.
At the end of June, EU leaders agreed to nominate Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the European Commission.
