EU ministers agree on sanctions against Iran for sending missiles to Russia
The European Union is set to introduce new sanctions against Iran for its transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia. EU ministers have agreed on the restrictions, citing FAZ.
According to European diplomats, on Monday, October 14, EU foreign ministers agreed on the sanctions during a meeting in Luxembourg.
Previously, the EU had repeatedly warned Iran against supplying ballistic missiles to Russia. Meanwhile, Tehran denies supplying missiles to Moscow.
German Minister for European Affairs Anna Lührmann said ahead of the meeting in Luxembourg that there is very clear evidence that Iran has transferred ballistic missiles, adding that this "clearly contradicts commitments to peace."
"We strive for the Ukrainian people to have the right to determine their future. Therefore, Russia should not be supported militarily," she said.
It is still unclear who will be included on the sanctions list. Names will soon be published in the official EU journal. Under the sanctions, European businesses will be prohibited from engaging with companies and individuals against whom restrictions have been imposed. The sanctions also entail the freezing of accounts and assets, as well as a travel ban to the EU.
Iran transfers missiles to Russia
Iran and Russia are actively cooperating, particularly in the military sphere. In September, it was reported that Iran transferred a batch of short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, likely the Fath 360 missiles.
Russia may use the received missiles to strike targets in Ukraine. For more details on Iranian missiles, see our article.
In response, the United States and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on Iran, despite Tehran's attempts to deny the transfers.
