The Council of the European Union has extended the application of individual restrictive measures against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons until 16 October 2026, according to the press service of the EU Council.

According to reports, the restrictive measures apply to a total of 25 individuals and 6 legal entities.

These persons are subject to asset freezes, and providing them, directly or indirectly, with funds or economic resources is prohibited. In addition, individuals included on the list are banned from entering the EU.

The sanctions regime aims to support the EU’s efforts to counter the proliferation and use of chemical weapons, as well as to promote compliance with the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction.

Sanctions for the proliferation and use of chemical weapons

On 22 March 2018, the European Council reaffirmed that the use of chemical weapons, including the use of any toxic chemical substances as weapons under any circumstances, is completely unacceptable, must be consistently and strongly condemned, and poses a security threat to all of us.

On 15 October of the same year, the EU Council adopted a legal framework for restrictive measures against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. This framework is currently in effect until 16 October 2026.

On 20 May 2025, the EU Council additionally imposed sanctions on three Russian organizations involved in the development and use of chemical weapons by Russian forces in Ukraine.
