EU envoy heads to Washington for Russia sanctions talks

EU Sanctions Envoy, David O'Sullivan, has arrived in Washington. Together with a team of experts, he will discuss sanctions against Russia, according to Sky News and Radio Liberty.
As reported by the media, O’Sullivan and his team will meet with American counterparts to discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia. EU leaders are not part of the delegation.
The European Commission is not aware of any visit by European leaders to Washington, which US President Donald Trump had earlier announced. EC representative Olof Gill only confirmed the presence of EU envoy David O’Sullivan and his team, who are negotiating with American counterparts.
Earlier, European Council President António Costa said the EU was preparing its 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The visit to Washington aims to align the details of this package with US partners.
Possible measures include restrictions on Russian payment and credit systems, cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as new steps targeting the country’s oil trade.
On September 7, Trump stated that European leaders would arrive in the US this week to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. He did not provide details on the specific participants.
Also on September 7, the US President declared he was ready to move to a second stage of sanctions against Russia.
Previously, Bild reported that Trump had a heated phone conversation with European leaders after the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris. He accused EU countries of buying Russian oil, which helps finance the Kremlin’s war machine.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal wrote that despite agreements with European partners, Trump has not committed to specific new sanctions against Russia.
