EU does not recognize Lukashenko's legitimacy: 'Blatant affront to democracy'
The European Union considers the so-called presidential elections in Belarus to be fraudulent. Brussels does not recognize Alexander Lukashenko's legitimacy, according to the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, on X.
"Lukashenko has clung to power for 30 years. Tomorrow, he’ll reappoint himself in yet another sham election. This is a blatant affront to democracy," she wrote.
Kallas emphasized that Lukashenko is not legitimate as the president of Belarus.
It is worth noting that earlier, EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Anita Hipper, called the so-called elections in Belarus a "sham."
"It’s not an election if you already know who’s going to win," she said.
Elections in Belarus
Today, January 26, the so-called presidential elections are taking place in Belarus. The leader of the Belarusian regime, Alexander Lukashenko, is running for the presidency for the seventh time.
In the 2020 Belarusian presidential elections, the opposition participated. However, Lukashenko retained power, many opposition politicians were imprisoned, and opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya fled the country due to threats of persecution.
The falsified elections triggered protests in Belarus. The demonstrations were suppressed, with the Kremlin providing assistance to Lukashenko in doing so.
